Fire Fire!

As I looked up from my computer today, while in the studio, I saw smoke rising. I wondered if I was seeing fire or just steam/smoke from something industrial. But then it seemed to get bigger in a way that industrial stuff doesnt, so out came the iPhone and I took some photos.

Along with others in the Twittersphere, we TwitPic-ed the blaze. Some of those photos also ended up on the Sky News homepage (which has since updated) as breaking news since crews had yet to arrive on scene to take their own snaps.

Just goes to show you how fast news travels when you’re plugged in.

St Patrick’s Day

Whodathunkit, but today is not a day of shenanigans filled with leprechauns, shamrocks, green beer and pinching bums of the non-green wearing folk here! London does not subscribe to what I hear is a day mostly celebrated by Americans and Irish ex-pats!

Coming over from Kansas City, home of one of the largest St Pat’s Day parades, this whole day seems like such a non-event! Yes, there are parties tonight with a green theme and sponsored by Guinness, but it’s like a springtime Halloween party.

I hit two networking events with a subtle Paddy Day theme. The first was Open Soho at Kettners. The meet up was filled mostly of tech and PR folks. I didnt stay long before heading off to “dirtysouthtwit” – a south of the river meet up for Twitter users. At the venue, my friend Chris, who does PR for Diageo/Guinness, had shirts, hats, pins and pens galore!

Finally, I had my green shirt with Guinness logo! WOOHOOOO!! It’s always the little things… really.

Thanks to Lolly, one of our hosts, for this photo!

More of the dirtysouthtwit set can be seen in Kai’s photoset.

Columbia Road

P1020747

Sundays on Columbia Road are filled with the smell of flowers and the sounds of the (mainly) men shouting out prices for each bundle and bush. Yesterday was a particularly lovely day in London. There was plenty of sun and a warm enough temperature to leave the coat behind.

Is Spring really upon us?

After wandering the street and checking out prices, I settled on a colorful bunch of somethingerothers. I think they are tulips.

I was going for something a bit more green, but sometimes the girl in me gives in to pinks.

SOTM photo shoot

fineprint
I met Mario of Someone Once Told Me for a photo shoot of my something someone had said to me that’s stuck with me. I had no idea what I was going to say, but in the end, I was quite happy with my choice.

The photos were taken in Camden, behind the World’s End pub. Then, we moved to a slightly more quiet location (is Camden quiet anywhere?) for the video portion.

In the photo here, I am signing my rights away. Bye, bye, rights! ;)

My Planet response

Planomenos Astir Aikaterine

A young woman sits in a room. She sits alone. She sits close to a computer. She looks out the window as she collects her thoughts. She turns to her keyboard to write. She sits there for hours and hours, clicking the tabs, responding to messages and searching for connection. She is obsessed with every note, update and friend.

She sits in a room alone, but she is not lonely.

The young woman looks out the window again, and recalls her childhood when she sat alone. She sat
close to a television. She watched the actors. She mouthed the lines in perfect sync. She sat there for
hours and hours, rewinding movies and watching them again. She was obsessed with every word, lyric,
and expression.

The young woman looks back to her computer screen and begins to type again. She realizes that she no
longer needs a stage or screen to make a story come to life. She connects with an audience online. By
living life like an open book, she builds relationships with strangers who become friends. She consumes
their knowledge, experience and words like precious morsels.

She sits in a room alone, but she is not lonely – through communication she builds a network.

The young woman looks out the window once more and she watches people go by. She wonders if they
look through the window and see her. She looks up at the clouds as they move, watching the shapes
change. She contemplates evolution. From the child who wanted to be a star, to the wandering star she
has become. She considers her future. It is unclear, but she is open to the possibilities.

The young woman turns to her computer again.

She sits in a room alone, but she is not lonely – through communication she builds a network. As her
network grows, so will she.

My Planet brief

MADS FULL TIME AND PART-TIME YEAR 1 MODES 2009

Project Five:
Wednesday 18th February – Monday/Wednesday 9th – 11th March

PLANET ME

Introduction
This project is designed to encourage you to define your self and give dimension and access to the process of self-analysis. You can start this project as soon as you like.

Brief
We would you like you to clarify who you believe that you are, and who you would like to be, by creating your own planet ‘PLANET ME’. Your planet should take the form of an artifact (i.e. you give your thoughts dimension, or sensory presence). It should not exceed 0.75m in any dimension. Like any planet yours will need to have a system that will sustain life and therefore evolution. Because it is your own planet you do not need to worry about other species so include only those ingredients that are essential for your own sustenance and growth. Your planet will be accompanied by a brief manual (300 words max) that allows others to know what you need them to do to maintain your growth. Try to avoid the literal. For example you will need food, but instead of naming your favourite curry, explore some metaphors: “Yum yum, I eat other people’s garbage by applying my imagination to developing new ways of recycling it.”

Presentation
Your ‘Planet’ and its Maintenance Manual will be exhibited in the studio in the week beginning Monday 9th March and will be reviewed by you, your colleagues, and your tutors.

Criteria
The project will be assessed against the following criterion:

• Your ability to utilize and apply your imagination
• The quality and range of your research
• Your ability to manage and take responsibility for planning, executing and delivering your own project
• Developing an artifact that manages the distinctions between clarity and intrigue
• The level of risk taking you display in your presentation
• Your ability to move beyond the predictable
• Your ability to understand and give dimension to metaphors
• Your ability to summarize and communicate succinctly what you have learnt in a way that stimulates the reader to want to know more
